An adventure crossing through the northern Patagonia Andean trails
The stunning expedition crosses the rich and lush vegetated valley of Río Puelo, which divides the two countries of the Patagonian Andes. The valley of the Puelo River is located right between the two cities of Puerto Montt in Chile (150Km) and San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina (150Km). The trip lasts 6 days and can be done either by horse or by foot. On this discovery trip, it is possible to return to the departure point or to continue to the neighboring country and thereby witnessing the geographical diversity of both countries. You will fly over volcanoes and glaciers, sail lakes and rivers, cross Andes trails through the same mountain passes as the first explorers did not so long ago. The Lake District is a luxuriant rainforest area covered by native flora and impenetrable mountains with few inhabitants. This allows us to enjoy the preservation of its virgin beauty, its cultural touch, its traditions and the variety of its wild fauna. By actually breathing and experiencing this "microclimate" day by day, you realize earth's treasures that remain to enjoy.

DAY 1 PUERTO MONTT-RIO PUELO-LLANADA GRANDE
The trip starts with a 120-km bus transfer from Puerto Montt Capital of the Lake District via Puerto Varas, Lake Llanquihue, Ensenada, Cochamó to finally arrive at the small village of Puelo on the estuary of River Puelo. Then continue to Tagua - Tagua Lake. From here onwards, there are no roads! A small boat with a powerful outboard engine is used to ferry up us River Puelo, across Lake Tagua-Tagua and the river mouths of River Manso and Traidor. We just stop to have a tasty lunch in a luxurious Fishing Lodge of the river. After 2:30 hours of navigating the river, the natural Port is reached. A 1:30 hour trekking, or an hour of horseback riding, we reach the village of Llanada Grande, a small, very remote and high located Andes village, with a plane landing field, police station and radio. An outstanding waterfall and the kindness of local people are the principal attractions. A local family will host us overnight. The large day ends with a traditional Creole dinner.
DAY 2 LLANADA GRANDE-BASE CAMP AT THE NATIVE FOREST
Breakfast. We continue following the trails up into the Andes Cordillera for about 5 hours. There will be some stops to enjoy the fantastic flora and the astonishing views. Lunch box en route. At the end of the day, we reach" Base Camp", where a welcoming traditional Chilean "Asado de Cordero" (Lamb bar-b-Que.) is prepared by the helping "Huasos" (Chilean Cowboys)! Base Camp has WC, showers and hot water. In case of Lodging at the Bandurrias Island option, we continue our route by 45' and 15' navigating Las Rocas Lake, and reach the beach of the cozy cottage at the island.
DAY 3 BASE CAMP & HIKING AROUND
Camp or cottage breakfast. The first excursion from Base Camp is to visit the Blue Lake "Lago Azul" with its radiant color and abundant fish life. It takes about a 4 hours walk to reach the Lake, passing through the typical cold jungle Valdivian-type rainforest with its ancient Alerce trees (Fitzroya Cupresoide) as well as other local "giants" such as the "Coihue" and "Arrayanes"(the cold tree). The majestic peaks and landscapes will not escape your attention! Lunch box en route.
We continue with a two hours trek, followed by the crossing of a small Lagoon and a boat trip across Lake "Las Rocas". After arriving at the Base Camp or our cottage, we will enjoy another special campsite meal.
DAY 4 BASE CAMP & HIKING AROUND
Camp or cottage breakfast. A day of rest to enjoy the numerous trails and paths close by. For the less tired ones, we suggest a 2,5 hour trek to "La Pasarela del Río Puelo", an important local hanging bridge crossing River Puelo, crucial for the communication of the local inhabitants with the outside world.
Along the way there will be many opportunities to see huge waterfalls and rapids. After returning to the Base camp or cottage, another local specialty meal will be waiting for us. Last night at base camp at "Campo La Colina", or cottage at the Bandurrias Island.
DAY 5 BASE CAMP-LAS ROCAS LAKE
Camp or cottage breakfast. Our journey continues to "Retén de Carabineros", Mountain Police Station, which leads to the border crossing, close to another small settlement. View of the Inferior Lake near "Segundo Corral". It takes about a four/five hour's walk to reach our goal. First up to Lago Las Rocas where we have to follow the lake's edge. After lunch we continue, ending this journey camping overnight by a big fire and a farewell "Asado Criollo", on our last night together.
Considering our two options to return the SIXT DAY:
Option A: Return, back to Chile. Puerto Montt via small aircraft
After breakfast, a 2-hour trek, enjoying the sight of the River Puelo source, and then crossing the river using a traditional raft method without engine we reach "Segundo Corral" aerodrome. From here a chartered aircraft (e.g. Cessna) will fly the 40 minutes back to Puerto Montt, which gives us a good sight of the trek we made these past few days. We also fly over and around volcanoes and the Andes Cordillera. Like a view of Tagua - Tagua Lake and the Rio Puelo course. Transfer to the city, end of our services.
Option B: Continue Via motor jet boat and transfer to Bariloche, Argentina.
Breakfast and the passing through the customs and immigration posts for Argentina, It is a short walk to reach Lake Puelo Inferior where a motor jet boat will take us across the lake and then down the river through the rapids, the natural limit between both countries. Before border formalities we arrive finally into Lago Puelo National Park. From here there will be a minibus transfer to Bariloche, where our service ends.
Note: The above expedition can also start from Bariloche (Argentina) and finish in Puerto Montt (Chile)
