Exploring
the Aysen Region & San Rafael Glacier
San Rafael Lagoon National Park (1.742.000 Hectares) with floating
floes, the San Rafael glacier (in gradual setback) and the usual fall
of ice. The ships remain between 5 to 8 hours in the Lagoon (170 km²)
and they use boats to travel it. A pier has been enabled for smaller
ships which leads to a path, where you arrive at the base of the San
Rafael snowdrift.
"Queulat" National Park (154.093 Hectares). It begins
slightly to the north of the "Risopatrón Lake" and
extends along the side of the Snowdrift. It is divided in several
areas that can be visited. The main attractions are the glaciers,
the rivers and especially, the virgin forest, which has neither been
crossed nor inhabited by colonists. Great part of the territory still
remains unexplored. This is the only Chilean park of these characteristics
that can be accessed by car.
Lake "General Carrera" (total surface of 224,000
hectares), 136,000 of which are located in Chilean territory and 88,000
in Argentina where it is called Lake Buenos Aires. Nautical soundings
carried out in 1997 determined its maximum depth: 590 meters, which
transforms it into the deepest in South America and the world's seventh
deepest.
