Excursion starts in Puerto Varas. Drive into Puerto Montt using the Old Road, built by the first settlers. Stop in Puerto Montt, in Angelmó, the harbour neighborhood, home of the fish market and the artisans fair. Free time to visit both. Drive out of Puerto Montt, through its coastline, passing by Chinquihue and Panitao, beautiful seaside bursting with seagulls and also the location of many sea-product industries, mostly devoted to the main regional export: salmon. Drive off the highway, this time using a very scenic gravel road leading to Monteverde, a rural area, location of an archeological site that changed all concepts about the human population process of America for good. Until this site was kindly revealed by nature (a mud slide) in the very rainy year of 1977, the widely accepted idea among the scientific community, was the so called, Clovis theory: remains found at that site in North America hinted that the Homo sapiens arrived to America through the Bering Strait (last section of the Würm glaciation, about 20,000 to 12,000years B.C.), used Clovis as a starting point of the migration southwards, most likely due to the rapid climatic changes. The Monteverde site, hence, proved the theory wrong and, at the same time, moved the historical clock, some 1,500 years backwards. Needless to say, finding this old at this area are extremely scarce, due to the acidity of the soil, that degrades them quickly, for instance, metal disappears within 150 years. Afterwards, the excursion continues on to a farm, towards which, transport considers the options of either an oxen or horse-tied cart. On arrival, a toast with ¨cicha¨: traditional, homemade spirit consisting of naturally fermented apple juice; while listening to a very interesting lecture on Monteverde and its striking importance in the understanding of Paleo-Indian cultures in America. Next, a revitalizing, delicious and typical country lunch. After the meal, a soft-paced, nice walk through the farm, while surrounded by the gorgeous native evergreen forest and some of the animals bred in the farm such as llamas, sheep, fallow deers. Back on the road, drive to Las Quemas, with a photo stop at its curious chapel. Continue up to Nueva Braunau, to visit the German Colonization Museum, that will transport the visitor to the 1850s, when immigrants, coming from all over the German federation, arrived to the region. Generations tamed the land, providing the nation with abundant agricultural products, specially through the difficult years of the early XXth. century, and up to present day, with most of the milk of Chile. After a day in the country, return to the hotel.
